Hope SF’s New Approach to Public Housing Garnering National Attention

theNextEconomy The Fund has been an early investor in HOPE SF, the ambitious initiative to rebuild public housing and improve the lives of public housing residents while creating new mixed-income neighborhoods. Pam David, the Fund’s Executive Director, serves on the public/private partnership’s steering committee, and was interviewed for a thoughtful new article in the National Journal, part of the Next Economy series. The article’s author, Sophie Novak, was struck by the innovative approaches being supported by HOPE SF, including putting authentic community involvement at the center:

Public-housing reform is not new, but Hope SF’s emphasis on resident-based programs like the walking school bus, in addition to rehabbing old buildings, could lead the effort to succeed in a way other housing projects have not—particularly in a city like San Francisco with its rapidly rising housing costs. The biggest challenge now is convincing residents, who have been so neglected in the past, that this time is different…
