With a renewed vision for cultural diversity, education, and engagement with community members, California Shakespeare Theater has begun complementing Shakespeare productions with productions of re-imagined classics and new plays based on classical literature. Cal Shakes’ experiment in how it develops and produces work runs deeper than what one sees on the stage. For example, a coming production of 1,001 Nights will incorporate stories gathered from sessions at local faith-based organizations. Community members are invited to participate actively in making theater, broadening the reach of Cal Shakes and opening artists to seldom heard voices.
