Master quilter Patricia Montgomery is collaborating with the African American Museum and Library at Oakland to create a series of 20 story quilts, “Forgotten Heroines of the Civil Rights Movement,” that will be structured in the shape of a swing coat. When exhibited, the coats representing unsung heroines will be hung from the library’s ceiling to simulate a civil rights march. The artist and museum are collaborating on historical research, exhibit development, and related public programs. Patricia Montgomery, who has created several mini-series story quilts, has served as a master artist for the 2011 Alliance for California Traditional Arts apprenticeship program. The African American Museum and Library combines library services with those of a museum—hosting exhibitions and public programs on the art, history, and culture of African Americans.
