|Grantee Name||Root Division|
Root Division offers subsidized studio space to visual artists in exchange for their commitment to community service. The group depends on the affordability of its facility but, in 2014, rising rents displaced it from its Mission District home. The Northern California Community Loan Fund helped Root Division find a temporary site and then secure a new long-term home. With a 10-year lease in hand, the Fund helps Root Division to cover its planning and construction costs for artists’ studios, classrooms, a public exhibition space, a fabrication shop, a digital lab, and offices. These facilities will serve more artists who in turn will provide more service to the community.
