Oakland Unified School District launched the African American Male Achievement Initiative to implement solutions that fundamentally improve outcomes for African American male students. While this initiative focuses on one population, OUSD believes that the improvements it makes will benefit all students. At the student level, middle school and high schools offer manhood development classes for African American boys and case management for targeted students. At the district level, work includes data tracking and analysis; training and support for schools; and district-led literacy, professional development, and curriculum-development efforts. The initiative also leads a family-engagement strategy and a citywide advocacy effort.
