While San Francisco’s Herbst Theatre was closed for seismic retrofitting, a committee of citizens worked to improve the quality and consistency of the space’s acoustics. Professional advice indicated that the primary need was to create a stage enclosure with ceiling sound reflectors that would be able to accommodate large orchestra and chorus configurations. New lighting also was needed to reduce energy use and heat. A challenge gift of $100,000 and this grant from the Fund helped the citizen committee to make these upgrades.
