Focusing on spoken word poetry, Youth Speaks offers a creative approach to literary arts and literacy skills instruction—one that appeals to youth. Youth Speaks challenges participants to think of their writing and performance as tools for social change. Its integrated model, supported through this grant from the Fund, provides young people with the chance to explore writing and performing through school visits, workshops, clubs, performances, and local and national poetry slam competitions. Youth Speaks successfully unites youth from a range of neighborhoods and economic backgrounds, using the arts to boost self-esteem, communication, and understanding.
