Already known for award-winning youth journalism, Youth Radio has begun experimenting with arts education and performance programs. These rigorous Youth Radio Arts Pathways have attracted an enthusiastic and diverse cadre of 300, mostly low-income students. Participants receive six months of training in media arts and technology, choosing between different disciplines and among a rich field of professional artist mentors. During the program period, youth help determine the course of their experience, weighing in on visual arts, media, or performance programs. A discrete space next door to Youth Radio’s headquarters now hosts youth-curated events and creative projects. All of this Arts Pathways programming is structured to support close mentoring relationships between professional artists and youth.
