The Black Teacher Project
Program Area(s) | |
Description | Research demonstrates the positive effects teachers of color have on students, increasing cross-cultural understanding and academic achievement for students of color. Of San Francisco Unified School District’s (SFUSD) 3,290 teachers, however, only 230 are black. In response, The Black Teacher Project launched a pilot, inviting black SFUSD teachers to participate in teacher learning groups. Three-quarters of participants strongly agreed that this pilot helped them find creative ways to address teaching challenges. This grant funds the continuation of this work in SFUSD and helps launch a black teacher-affinity group in Oakland. |
