The Black Teacher Project

Program Area(s)
Description

The Black Teacher Project recruits and develops black teachers to take positions in public schools. San Francisco Unified School District has 3,290 teachers, but only about 230 are black, and they are the district’s fastest declining ethnic group of teachers. This grant supports monthly professional development sessions that will take place within black teacher affinity groups. Facilitated by veteran master teachers, these groups will focus on teaching literacy, integrating culturally relevant pedagogy, and creating positive classroom environments. The Black Teacher Project aims to learn how and to document whether this work keeps effective black teachers in the district.
