| Description | The Beat Within trains and places volunteers as writing and art workshop leaders in juvenile detention centers in the Bay Area and beyond. Pieces written by participating youth are published in a journal distributed to detained youth and adults who work in the institutions that interact with them. In order to sustain mentoring relationships after youth are released, The Beat Within is offering workshops through community agencies that serve runaways, youth on probation, and those in foster care. All Beat Within workshops teach literacy skills and offer opportunities for youth to tell their stories. |
