| Description | The Beat Within trains volunteers to lead creative writing workshops for incarcerated youth. It publishes participants’ work in a magazine, providing a rare opportunity for these youth to develop their writing and reflect on their choices. Many participants come from low-income, single-parent homes and at least 78% are current or former foster youth. The Beat Within has established chapters or inspired similar organizations in other parts of the country. This grant focuses on The Beat Within’s program at Juvenile Hall in San Francisco. |
