Each week across the Bay Area, paid and volunteer facilitators from The Beat Within present one-hour writing workshops to youth held in short- and long-term lockdown facilities. Adult facilitators work one-on-one with participants on writing and submitting selected pieces for print in a biweekly journal, The Beat Within. This program provides incarcerated youth with a forum through which they can discuss things that matter to them. They also benefit by experiencing the mentoring of caring adults. The Beat Within’s curriculum is based on California’s Visual and Performing Arts educational standards. It is one of the grantees supported through the Fund’s three-year experiment in supporting arts education programs for incarcerated youth.
