San Francisco Shakespeare Festival

Program Area(s)
Description

San Francisco Shakespeare Festival (SF Shakes) performs Shakespeare’s plays in Bay Area parks, completely free of charge. In 2013 it produced a brisk, 90-minute Macbeth. This grant from the Fund supported both SF Shakes’ production in the Presidio and its first in McLaren Park, intended to draw more audience members from San Francisco’s southeast sector. Market research revealed that 23% of SF Shakes attendees were seeing their first plays, 10% had annual household income levels of less than $20,000, and most were under the age of 35.
