San Francisco Friends of Chamber Music promotes and supports music played by small ensembles. To connect musicians with new audiences, it developed a free event titled SFMusic Day · Live + Free, featuring ensemble music from different cultural traditions and serving audiences who might not otherwise attend musical events. SFMusic Day reaches a relatively young and low-income audience — 20% of those attending in 2015 had household incomes of under $35,000 and many more reported incomes below $50,000. The 2015 event features short performances, a special focus on Asian American jazz, and a field report series on new experimental groups.
