Operating in some of the most challenged elementary schools in California, Reading Partners offers a quality reading program to low-income students. Volunteers provide one-on-one reading instruction in dedicated classrooms, applying a research-based curriculum. Ninety percent of fourth-graders in California’s low-income communities are not reading at grade level. After entering the Reading Partners program, these students gained an average of 1.6 months of reading skills per month, gains that continued after they exited the program. With one year of instruction, 64% of Reading Partners students had caught up to grade level.
