There are few non-stereotypical, authentic images of the LGBTQ community in the media, and queer women and non-gender-conforming individuals of color are nearly invisible. Queer Women of Color Media Arts Project responds by making “the most marginalized visible and vocal in the most expensive art form in the world.” It provides intensive filmmaking workshops to a dozen women each year and produces a free annual film festival. Project workshops have led to creation of 390 films by LGBTQ women of color, putting artistic tools and access into the hands of a particularly low-income, marginalized population.
