Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) serves a rapidly increasing number of students who have lived in the United States for less than three years. In order to better care for this growing population, the district will implement professional development opportunities specifically tailored for teachers of newcomer students. This grant will allow OUSD to implement 10-week long lesson study groups for newcomer teachers, pilot a program to reduce teacher burnout, and track efforts to gauge these programs efficacy in terms of both teacher training and retention.
