Oakland Youth Chorus plays an important role in providing East Bay youth with the opportunity to engage in high-quality choral music in their schools and in after-school, highly-trained performing groups. The Chorus is committed to remaining accessible to any motivated student while preserving its high artistic standards. Its rigorous programs teach a sequence of skills and music from an array of those cultural traditions appropriate to Oakland’s diversity. This grant helps Oakland Youth Chorus to engage with a socio-economically diverse set of families by expanding to six schools that serve many low-income students. It also helps subsidize tuition for 200 low-income students who could not otherwise afford to participate in the performing choruses.
