Oakland Symphony

Program Area(s)
Description

The Oakland Symphony provides free services to those Oakland public schools in which music teachers are struggling with budget cuts. Its Music for Excellence (MUSE) program sends 20 professional musician mentors into 22 schools where they work with students in small groups, teaching instrumental technique and theory. Students gain opportunities to further their skills by playing in after-school ensemble programs. Additionally, a handful of committed students identified through MUSE receive free private music lessons and support auditioning for local youth orchestras.
