Movimiento De Arte Y Cultura Latino Americana De San Jose and Viviana Paredes

Program Area(s)
Description

Viviana Paredes is collaborating with MACLA to uplift Latinx Indigenous practices in response to global warming through an immersive site-specific installation featuring two large glass sculptures of the maguey plant’s stalk, the quiote, often used as an instrument. The sculptures will hang from the ceiling and emit sound, a mix of the instrument (like a digeridoo) and words in Indigenous languages of southern Mexico (Zapotec, Triqui, Mixtec, Mazatec, Chinantec, Mixé). The dark gallery which will incorporate projections of the lost languages will create a meditative and healing environment, a call to the ancestors for restorative environmental justice.
