Living Jazz

Program Area(s)
Description

Living Jazz offers jazz camps and classes for students across generational lines. For five months each fall and winter, it operates free choral music programs in three Oakland elementary schools that serve a high percentage of students who are socioeconomically disadvantaged. Students from these classes form the Oakland Children’s Community Choir and perform at the organization’s annual “In the Name of Love” tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King. Community choir instruction focuses on mastering basic vocal skills, performance etiquette, and stage presence. Music lessons are also linked to the historical context of the civil rights movement.
