Gamelan Sekar Jaya is a 60-member Bay Area ensemble of musicians and dancers together recognized as the finest Balinese gamelan ensemble outside of Indonesia. One key aspect of the group’s success is its direct interaction with master artists. Over the past 35 years, more than 50 of Bali’s most renowned musicians, dancers, and theater artists have joined Sekar Jaya for extended residencies. While in residence, artists share their skills with the company and present master classes and demonstrations for the general public, fostering cultural exchange. In 2015, Sekar Jaya is hosting two guest dance directors and two guest music directors who will contribute to a new suite of pieces honoring Sekar Jaya’s 35th anniversary.
