Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, Gamelan Sekar Jaya is a 60-member company of musicians and dancers that specializes in Balinese performing arts. It is recognized as one of the finest gamelan ensembles outside of Indonesia. A key aspect of this success is the group’s direct artistic interaction with master artists from Bali. While in residence, master artists share their skills with the company and offer classes and demonstrations to the general public to foster direct cultural exchange. In 2014, Sekar Jaya will host a Balinese dancer/teacher and a musician¬/composer. The ensemble’s residency program continually strengthens and renews this distinctive company’s artistry.
