First Exposures mentors teach photography and help stabilize the lives of Bay Area youth. Using referrals, the program reaches young people who face high risk of failure in school and who live in housing shelters, foster homes, or low-income housing. During the academic year, 30 students are matched one-on-one with photographer-mentors for weekly sessions. First Exposures also offers an eight-week summer session. Ninety percent of First Exposures participants graduate from high school and students’ work gets exhibited in bus shelters, galleries, and in publications.
