Description | Playwright Eugenie Chan’s great-grandmother was an immigrant brothel madam in Barbary Coast Chinatown. Chan’s latest play, Madam Ho, is inspired by her story. Donaldina Cameron House, a community center in Chinatown, supported free community performances of Madam Ho in October 2017. The play featured a cast of Asian American actors and was produced in English with colloquial 19th century Cantonese supertitles. The project included community discussions, lectures by experts on Chinese American history and human trafficking, and a bilingual lobby display on the historical and contemporary impact of trafficking in Chinatown. |
