Center for the Art of Translation

Program Area(s)
Description

Among other activities, Center for the Art of Translation manages Poetry Inside Out — a translation-based language arts program for K-12 students. Poetry Inside Out reaches schools through a professional-development program for teachers and through professional poet-translators who lead 16-session programs in classrooms. Students learn about major writers, hear poems in their original languages, work to decode poems, and devise translations. Students also write their own poetry. The program requires students to open themselves to the nuances of language, which in turn strengthens their reading skills. Lessons are offered in a dozen languages.
