Description | Among Mardi Gras-style festivals in the United States, San Francisco’s Carnaval is unusual in presenting performers representing multiple Latin American and Afro-Caribbean traditions. Over the course of the festival’s history, it has been sponsored by several Mission District nonprofits and maintained a long relationship with Mission Neighborhood Centers. After a change in sponsorship and a more limited event in 2014 and 2015, its founders seek to inspire the next generation of leaders so as to maintain this cultural resource. Using general operating support from the Fund, Carnaval will invest in training interns during its 2016 festival development period, a key step toward passing on the mantle of leadership. |
