Despite Oakland Unified School District’s priority of full inclusion for special-needs students, often those students do not get invited to participate in classes led by visiting artists. AXIS, a distinguished company composed of dancers with and without disabilities, is working with the District to ensure that special-needs students have the opportunity to study dance with visiting artists. This effort will begin with a three-year pilot project, during which AXIS will work closely with two schools with large populations of special-needs students. The company will provide professional development to physical education and dance teachers, then work alongside those teachers in class, modeling how students with and without disabilities can learn together.
