Au Co Vietnamese Cultural Center began as a school promoting the language and culture of the Vietnamese people in the United States. With the guidance of acclaimed Vietnamese performer and composer Van-Anh Vo, it then grew to offer children and youth music lessons on traditional Vietnamese instruments. Vo’s classes teach Vietnamese folk and popular American music, bridging students’ dual identities as Vietnamese and Americans. This program develops students’ musical skills and shows evidence of re-connecting participants with their heritage. Au Co’s well-attended productions feature elaborate, traditional costumes and sets made by community members.
