Alameda County Office of Education

Program Area(s)
Description

Theories about 21st century learning suggest that students need new research, analytical, and critical thinking skills. The Alameda County Office of Education addresses these needs by combining the teaching of several disciplines in individual classrooms. This integrated learning often incorporates the arts in order to broaden students’ investigation of ideas and improve their problem solving abilities. The Fund’s support helps add a new 30-unit session to the Office’s Integrated Learning Specialist Program that focuses on culturally responsive teaching. All teachers at two high-needs Oakland public middle schools will take these workshops. The project incorporates follow up coaching and a formal evaluation.
