African American Male Achievement Initiative of the Oakland Unified School District

Program Area(s)
Description

In 2010, Oakland Unified School District launched the African American Male Achievement Initiative in order to improve school outcomes for this demographic. The Initiative pilots innovative solutions focused on African American males, but the District believes this work will prove beneficial for the wider student population. Collectively, the interventions are proving effective, with suspensions down by half, attendance climbing, and grades improving. This grant from the Fund supports the Initiative’s efforts to support principals in integrating best practices and to train teachers in boosting African American male student literacy.
