African American Male Achievement

Program Area(s)
Description

In 2010, Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) launched its African American Male Achievement Initiative, piloting a manhood-development class and other supports. While the successes of the students in this class have received well-earned attention, the Initiative’s ability to attract and retain African American male teachers is also laudable. Its community of practice unites teachers, coaches, and staff for a two-week summer training, bi-monthly professional development, and on-going mentoring and coaching. These elements, included to increase teacher effectiveness, have also shown benefits in terms of teacher retention.
