Chinatown Community Development Center -

Mobilizing America's Youth -

Mobilizing America's Youth (Mobilize.org), a fast-growing and technologically savvy organization founded by U.C. Berkeley students in 2002, is working to keep youth as engaged as they were during the recent presidential election. This grant helped Mobilize.org conduct a San Francisco 'summit' in October 2008 as part of a series around the country in which young people came together to develop ideas on how to improve our democracy. Mobilize.org conducted outreach throughout the Bay Area in advance of the summit, bringing together a diverse group of young adults. The teams of youth and their community partners developed proposals, which were then honed over the course of the conference. The top proposals, as voted on by participants, received mini-grants of up to $5,000 and the support of Mobilize.org to help turn their civic visions into reality.

Mujeres Unidas y Activas -

Mujeres Unidas y Activas (MUA) is a grassroots organization founded by and for Latina immigrant women. It provides peer support and leadership training, and promotes civic participation. Members receive formal training and practical experience serving as community organizers, peer counselors, meeting facilitators, and domestic violence advocates. This new grant supports MUA's continuing efforts to prepare the organization for generational shifts in leadership. MUA will build the executive leadership skills of its long-term Latina immigrant management staff, train and support its new second line of leaders, and strengthen its fundraising infrastructure.

The National Center for Family Philanthropy is the only nonprofit resource dedicated exclusively to family foundations. This grant supports the dissemination of its newest effort, Pursuit of Excellence, an assessment process designed to address family-specific aspects of governing and managing a foundation. Windcall Institute -

Since 1989, more than 400 social justice leaders from around the country have gone through the Windcall Institute's residency program. It gives executive directors and organizers an opportunity to take several weeks away from their stressful jobs and spend time reflecting, renewing themselves through art and nature, and benefiting from peer support. Trust For Public Land -

The Trust for Public Land's Urban Parks Initiative works to create equitable access to quality parks in low-income neighborhoods. In the coming three years, it is working to renovate three parks and playgrounds in neighborhoods least served by the current park system and not receiving funds from a recent San Francisco ballot measure. Proposed sites are Balboa Park in the Outer Mission/Excelsior, Boedekker Park in the Tenderloin, and Hayes Valley Playground in the Western Addition. The Fund's grant supports the Trust for Public Land's efforts to involve neighbors and community groups in planning, design, enhancing park elements, and stewardship of the sites.

Neighborhood Parks Council promotes the creation, expansion, and maintenance of San Francisco public parks, with a focus on achieving a more equitable distribution of parks and open space throughout the city. Founded in the aftermath of the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, East Bay Collaborating Agencies Responding to Disaster (East Bay CARD) was created to provide culturally appropriate, sustainable, accessible emergency preparedness trainings to vulnerable communities. East Bay CARD provides on-site trainings for dozens of agencies, teaching staff personal and home preparedness, hazard reduction in the workplace, and how to develop and practice an emergency plan. This grant follows two previous years of support and will enable CARD to expand its training programs by implementing a train-the-trainers program.

Alameda County Community Food Bank -

Catholic Charities of the East Bay manages the rental assistance program for Alameda County residents using funds from Season of Sharing and FEMA funds. Working with a network of 22 organizations, Catholic Charities provides rental assistance to 2,700 households each year, providing one-time assistance for move-in expenses or to prevent eviction. It now receives 20-25 requests a day for assistance, more than double last year's. Most applicants are families with children. This grant supplemented the pool of rental assistance funds, which was running low at the close of 2008.

The Alameda County Community Food Bank provides food to county residents through a network of 300 community agencies, including 15 public schools. San Francisco Food Bank -

The San Francisco Food Bank stocks more than 600 community food programs with food. Last year, it distributed 33 million pounds of food, half of it fresh produce, which fed more than 66,000 people each day. Community food programs in San Francisco and Marin County stocked by the food bank report a significantly higher demand for food, and the food bank seeks to increase its distribution capacity to 42 million pounds of food by 2013 to meet this demand.
