Community Arts Stabilization Trust (CAST) was created in response to rising evictions and real estate costs faced by arts nonprofits in San Francisco. It mitigates these urgent issues by purchasing buildings and giving nonprofits the option of buying them; leasing buildings to nonprofit arts organizations at below-market rates; and by mapping nonprofit arts spaces across San Francisco to inform planning and policy work. CAST began with an explicit focus on the Tenderloin, Central Market, South of Market, and Mission neighborhoods but looks to expand its work to downtown Oakland. This flexible multiyear general operating support from the Fund addresses CAST’s most critical financial need and helps the start-up to remain nimble.
