As a result of a California Reinvestment Coalition led effort, a new state contract gives public-benefit recipients fee-free cash access through at least two statewide networks of ATMs. This makes California the first and only state in the country that doesn’t charge for ATM access within its Department of Social Services’ contracted networks. As a next step, the Coalition will focus on helping public benefit recipients to establish bank accounts so they can receive benefits through direct deposit.
